Brian spent many years as a careers master in a large northern grammar school before writing his annual reference book Degree Course Offers now titled Heap 2016, which was first published in 1968. He is internationally accepted as the 'guru' of university choice and has lectured in universities and schools throughout the UK and at international schools in Europe, the Far East, Middle East and the USA. He broadcasts on radio and TV.

Last week I was talking to the managing director of a Yorkshire firm who recalled one university student who was on a sandwich course while working with them on his year out. They were so impressed with him that they felt that they had to find ways to attract him back when he completed the course, so they offered to fund the rest of his course at university if he returned as an employee. Which he did!

This is not unusual, some years ago a student of mine went to Bath University to take his BSc course in Accounting and Finance. It included a year with an industrial placement and he opted for paid work experience in Montreal. At the end of the year the firm were also equally impressed and they offered him a job when he graduated which he grabbed with both hands.

There was also a girl who took a business course with a Japanese option and was sent for a year to Japan to work for a travel company. At the end of the year they asked her to open an office in London to liaise with Japanese business men travelling on business to the UK.

There are countless stories like these. You can read more about the financial benefits of sandwich courses in the standard reference book ‘Heap 2016 - Degree Course Offers’ (Trotman Publishing). One engineering student, said: “I was able to earn £15,000 during my year out and £4,000 during my three-month vacation with the same firm”.

Most universities offering vocational courses will offer industrial placements arranged by the university although you can make your own arrangements.
