Welsh students need to apply through Student Finance Wales for their student finance, regardless of where they’re studying in the UK.
The financial help available to them differs from Student Finance England. As well as a Tuition Fee Loan, they can also apply for a Fee Grant. Students can receive up to £3,900 for their Tuition Fee Loan, and up to £5,100 for their Fee Grant.
The Fee Grant covers the difference between the maximum Tuition Fee Loan available and the tuition fee charged by their university or college. The amount they can get depends on their household income and where they’re studying. The Fee Grant doesn’t have to be paid back.
Maintenance Loans are available, the only difference is that they could get up to £1,500 from their student loan balance cancelled by the Welsh Government when they start repaying.
They’re eligible for partial cancellation once they start repaying either voluntarily or when they’ve left university or college and their income is over £21,000 a year. The amount of partial cancellation depends on the amount of Maintenance Loan taken out, when they start to repay.
The partial cancellation will be £1,500 unless they’ve taken out a smaller Maintenance Loan. If they borrow less than £1,500 the partial cancellation will be less – in line with the amount they’ve borrowed. They’re only entitled to get partial cancellation once.
Welsh students can also apply for a Welsh Government Learning Grant to help with living cost, and they could get up to £5,161 depending on their household income. The Special Support Grant replaces the Welsh Government Learning Grant for some students in certain circumstances.
As part of Student Money Week (8-14 February) we’ll be hosting a live web chat for Welsh students where you can ask us anything you’re unsure about. Please check our student finance zone on The Student Room for further details.
