▌The new Advanced Learner Loan
Learners can apply for an Advanced Learner Loan instead of a 24+ Advanced Learning Loan, here we highlight some of the changes.

Advanced Learner Loans have replaced 24+ Advanced Learning Loans for learners aged 24 and over.

The new name was prompted by the government’s decision to allow learners aged 19-23 to apply for the loan in academic year 2016/17.

When the 24+ Advanced Learning Loan launched three years ago it was available to learners in further education who were aged 24 and over and studying a Level 3 or Level 4 course. The Advanced Learner Loan has been expanded to include Level 5 and Level 6 qualifications. So, most learners aged 19 or over, studying a course from Level 3 up to Level 6 will now qualify for a loan to help pay the fees charged by colleges and training organisations.

Learners can now also apply for up to four loans at the same time for courses of the same type and level. In addition, if a learner withdraws from a course, they will be able to apply for a ‘repeat loan’ of the same level and type, taking the potential maximum number of loans up to five. An unlimited number of repeat loans are available if the learner has withdrawn from their course for compelling personal reasons.

None of these changes apply to learners aged 24 and over who started their course before 1 August 2016. They will still be subject to the previous rules.
