SLC will determine, in our sole discretion, whether there has been a breach of these terms and conditions through your use of our site.  Where a breach has occurred we may take such action as we deem appropriate.

2. Prohibited Uses

You may only use our site for lawful purposes.  You may not use our site:

3. Data Protection and Privacy

By proceeding to complete this registration form, you hereby confirm that you are either now or you intend to be a student seeking support to study at a College or University in the UK or you are the parent, spouse or financial sponsor of a student making such an application. If you are not a student or a parent, spouse or financial sponsor of a student making an application for support in the UK then your registration on this website will not be accepted and your application will automatically be deleted.

By proceeding with this registration form you hereby consent to the Terms and Conditions herein and to SLC processing your personal data for the purpose as stated.

The Student Loans Company Limited is registered as a Data Controller with the Information Commissioner under the Data Protection Act 1998 and is committed to respecting your online privacy.  We will apply appropriate protection and management of any personally identifiable information you share with us. The level of protection will be based on an assessment of the harm that is likely to be caused by the loss or unauthorised disclosure of the personal information you give us.  The information you provide will be processed by SLC in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998.  These Terms and Conditions only cover this website and do not extend to links to other external websites within this site.

SLC is committed to protecting the privacy and security of the information you submit to us.  All personal information you provide is transferred via a secured connection.  This is completed under 128 bit SSL (Secure Socket layer) encryption, which is a leading security standard for the transmission of data within the e-services industry.

If you choose to use the 'web chat' or 'co-browse' facilities available on our website, you should be aware that these services are hosted within the United States of America, and therefore by electing to use these facilities you are accepting that any information you disclose will be processed on behalf of SLC by LivePerson Inc in the United States of America.

The information provided in this form will be used to process the student finance application. The Student Loans Company (SLC) will use the information provided to determine the eligibility for student finance, assess the maximum amount of financial support entitled to and to make payment of student support. SLC is the data controller for this information.  The Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills has transferred certain functions relating to student finance applications to SLC. The Secretary of State for Innovation, Universities and Skillsis also a Data Controller for all of this information as he is responsible for it by law. However, if you would like to see your information please contact SLC.

SLC may use this information for test purposes in the course of maintaining or developing their systems. Information may also be disclosed to the H.M. Revenue and Customs to assist in the collection of loan repayments. In the future the H.M. Revenue and Customs may have shared access to the loan account information to assist in the performance of that function.

SLC will have access to the loan account information to set up the loan account, provide customer assistance services and, generally, to respond to any questions received from the student or the student's parent, spouse or financial sponsor and update information on the loan account.

Where appropriate, the relevant College or University will receive from SLC information in the registration form to facilitate the loan account and make payment of the support to the student. It is envisaged that the College or University may have shared access to the loan account information in the future to facilitate this function.

The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (DBIS) may use information provided in this registration form and application for student support for statistical purposes to monitor the performance of the support system and to inform future policy.

By law, SLC and Colleges or Universities are under a duty to protect the public funds they handle and may use the information provided in this registration form and application for student support to prevent and detect fraud. They may also share the information, for the same purposes, with other organisations which handle public funds.

SLC will only use the personal data as necessary to provide the aforementioned services. You agree that they can use this personal data for such purposes unless and until you inform SLC otherwise or unless you grant your consent to further uses of this personal data.

SLC will not keep the personal data for longer than is necessary or is permitted by law and they will take all reasonable steps to ensure that it is kept up to date.

You have a right of access to the information held about you processed by SLC and access requests should be submitted to 100 Bothwell Street, Glasgow G2 7JD.  All access requests should be in writing and should be accompanied by the statutory fee of £10.

Where you come from a country that is not a member of the EU, and your eligibility for student support is assessed by DBIS, it is DBIS who is the data controller in respect of that eligibility assessment and so you should send the access request to DBIS at PO Box 89, Darlington, County Durham, England, United Kingdom, DL1 9AZ.
SLC have legal obligations under the Data Protection Act 1998 to ensure that all information held and processed complies with the principles of the Act.  To achieve this aim SLC need accurate personal information about you. Please help SLC to take prompt and efficient action in informing us of any changes to your personal circumstances by contacting SLC in writing at the address listed for SLC's Headquarters. SLC will correct your account details as soon as possible, and notify any of the other parties to whom such personal data may have been supplied in accordance with the preceding paragraph.
Your personal information will not be disclosed to any other party, except in the following instances permitted by law:

  • where we are legally compelled to do so;
  • where there is a duty to the public to disclose;
  • where disclosure is required to protect our interest; (this will not be a reason for disclosing your personal information to anyone else for marketing purposes);
  • where disclosure is made at your request or with your consent.

Certain information collected may be classified as sensitive and SLC can only use such data where they have your explicit consent or where one of the other requirements in the Data Protection Act 1998. This data relates to racial or ethnic origin, political opinions, religious beliefs, physical or mental health, criminal proceedings and offences, trade union membership and sexual life.

SLC may monitor usage of this website to enable us to update and tailor same to the needs of our users.  We may also keep a record of those links which are most regularly used, thus enabling us to provide the most helpful information to our users.   As part of the operation of our service, some of our web pages may use cookies (and other tracking technologies).  A "cookie" is a small text file downloaded on your computer's hard drive a cookie's main objective is to identify users and personalise their visit by customising web pages for them for example by welcoming them by name next time they visit the same site.
